Transient lactose intolerance in infancy.

چکیده
Bartrop, R. W., and Hull, D. (1973). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 48, 963. Transient lactose intolerance in infancy. The clinical details of 100 infants with disaccharide intolerance secondary to a variety of bowel disorders were examined. Malnourished infants under 6 months of age were particularly at risk. The difficulty of establishing the relevance of sugar intolerance is emphasized. The analysis suggested that infants with troublesome, persistent diarrhoea under the age of 6 months, particularly those underweight, should be treated with a lactose-free diet, but that lactose might be introduced once the child is thriving and stools have returned to normal consistency.

Lactose intolerance and gastrointestinal cow’s milk allergy in infants and children – common misconceptions revisited
Lactose is the main carbohydrate in human and mammalian milk. Lactose requires enzymatic hydrolysis by lactase into D-glucose and D-galactose before it can be absorbed. Term infants express sufficient lactase to digest about one liter of breast milk daily. Physiological lactose malabsorption in infancy confers beneficial prebiotic effects, including the establishment of Bifidobacterium-rich fec...

This paper provides support for the suggestion that a lactose intolerance might be a cause of chronic diarrhoea and failure to thrive in infancy. The interest stimulated by this suggestion has resulted in the accumulation of a considerable amount of knowledge on intestinal disaccharide absorption and malabsorption. [The SCI® indicates that this paper has been cited in over 120 publications sinc...
متن کاملImprovement of symptoms in infant colic following reduction of lactose load with lactase.
Transient lactose intolerance has been identified as a possible causative factor in infant colic. A double-blind randomised placebo-controlled crossover study to investigate this has been undertaken in 53 babies with symptoms of colic. Pre-incubation of the feed with lactase resulted in breath hydrogen levels and total crying time which were both at least 45% lower than figures with placebo tre...
متن کاملResidual intestinal disease after milk allergy in infancy.
BACKGROUND The subsidence of cow's milk allergy (CMA) has been a subject of controversy. In this study the authors examined whether children with this condition in infancy developed full tolerance or whether they continue to have vague gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms relating to the consumption of milk or dairy products and/or signs of mucosal lesion in the GI tract. METHODS The authors reexam...
